Swell Event: OBSF Is Going Off
Bob was right. You're gonna want a big board.

I''ll never forget looking at boards in my early 20s at Wise Surfshop [1968-2019], a blanket of fog beyond Kelly''s Cove moving in. Bob Wise, the legend himself, noticed I was looking at some thin rails, and interrupted my internal monologue, "You know, for The Beach, you''re gonna want a big board. 7-8 footer at least." I literally had no idea who he was at the time, and chuckled… "yeah OK [old man]".
Fast forward to my leash snapping on my 6''6 on a proper double overhead OB swell after spending 2 hours trying to finesse the current.
Fuck, Bob was right.
Today kicks off a week of offshores and ground swell. 7-8ft @ 15s from the West / ENE winds. If you''re from San Francisco, you know what that means — 8 ft inside bar, 12 ft outside bar, occasional quadruple overhead funboy. Weeks like this are epic, but test your patience as a surfer. If type 3 fun exists, a big swell at OB is your Magna Carta.
Every season I tell myself I''m going to be inside one of those green monsters, and every season I become the lip.
Here''s to another magnificent week of cam rewinds and drone footy. Oh, and a few waves I suppose. Ultimately, my fate in the lineup is at the whims of the OB Gods, whomever they are (Bob is that you??).
Swell Event Bingo Card
- Goofy footers save the day (ah yes, the lefts always look better from here) - Drone goes down from hurricane-force offshore spray - A man probably older than your dad catches a set wave - Nat Young casually fleeces a barrel on 26 liters - One of the Coffey brothers does NOT snake somebody - Chorus of tech workers retort: "Oh wow that paddle is not easy hueheuhua"
